About

Pia Hutters (born 1964, Copenhagen). I am a painter and a sculptor working figurative as well as abstract.

SCULPTURES

Based on a foundation of classical drawing and understanding of anatomy, I continuously explore various aspects of the human condition. I observe and extract from the posture of the body. Even small gestures, muscles and the angling of the skeleton tell a story. Clay is my favourite media because it honestly shows the pressure from my hands as a mirror of my interpretation, and as such the artwork takes form and tells its own story.

PAINTINGS

Living and working a few years in Tokyo has inspired me to work with Japanese ’Sumi-e’ ink and Japanese ’Fude’ brushes on various types of paper, including the traditional Japanese handmade paper ’Washi’.

My works are intuitive brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. Like a kind of testimony of the creator’s character and the context of creation in that brief and coherent period of time. It is a spiritual practice related to various dimensions of Japanese aesthetics, among others, the imperfect perspective of ’Wabi-sabi’, the understated and simplicity entailed in ’Kanso’ as well as the tranquillity and serenity of ’Seijaku’.

DRAWINGS AND SKETCHES

I continuously work with sketches and drawings of the body both as preliminary studies for my sculptural works and as solitary artwork. Based on the classical traditions of drawing and croquis, I use pencil, ink and charcoal on paper. Occasionally, I include other materials like e.g. chalk and acrylic paint for background depth.
